Cured ham exports grow by 8,18% in value during the first half of 2024 despite the drop in volume

 

The Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE) has revealed the figures of exports corresponding to the first half of 2024, highlighting an increase in value of 8,18% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 321,5 million euros. This increase has occurred despite a slight drop in export volume, which fell by 3,52% to 26.790 tonnes.

 

The average price per kilo of ham stood at 12 euros, which represents an increase of 12,12% compared to 2023. As for destinations, the European Union remains the main market, representing 68% of exports with 18.228 tons, although it experienced a reduction of 7,84%. For its part, the Third Countries They have increased their import volume by 7,18%, totalling 8.562 tonnes, consolidating their relevance in the sector.

 

EU countries imported a total of 18.228,54 tonnes of cured ham, accounting for 68% of exports, compared to the 8.562,21 tonnes obtained in Third Countries.

 

Álvaro Díaz de Liaño, Marketing and Promotion Director of the CJSE, stressed the importance of this growth in value, highlighting "the consolidation of Spanish Serrano ham in the Third Countries and in the European market” thanks to “the intense work of dissemination and the commitment to export quality pieces”.

 

Among the most prominent markets within the European Union, France and Germany lead with more than 50% of exports, while Sweden and Austria recorded significant growth in value, with 27,20% and 22,64%, respectively. Outside the EU, Mexico has been the country with the greatest increase in value (58,56%), followed by Switzerland (33,58%) and Brazil (20,17%).

 

In terms of formats, boneless ham, which represents 85,23% of exports, increased by 12,18% in value. Díaz de Liaño attributed this increase to the preference for sliced ​​ham in many markets, pointing out that “boneless ham has increased in terms of value mainly due to the fact that consumers increasingly prefer this sliced ​​format in most countries.”

 

Despite the drop in volume, the overall figures reflect the strength of the sector, with a significant increase in the average price of exports and a diversification of key markets.
