This innovative real-time water quality monitoring solution has enabled the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers of Panama (IDAAN) optimize the management of this critical resource, significantly reducing response times to potential contamination and improving efficiency in decision-making.
The digitization of Panama Canal, one of the most important infrastructures on the planet, marks a milestone in sustainable water management. The collaboration between the IDAAN and Libelium has resulted in the implementation of an advanced monitoring system that overcomes the limitations of traditional methods based on manual sampling and video cameras.
The need for this technological transformation arises from the risks inherent in the daily transit of approximately 40 vessels through the canal. Any polluting discharge from these vessels can travel upstream into the lake. Alajuela, a reservoir crucial to the canal's functioning and a source of drinking water for the population. Early detection and rapid response to these incidents are essential to protecting public health and ecosystems.

“Libelium’s technology has allowed us to obtain accurate, real-time data on water quality, which is essential for making informed decisions and protecting this vital resource,” said a spokesperson for IDAAN. “Previously, we relied on manual sampling and video cameras, which had limitations in terms of coverage and response time.”
The solution implemented by Libelium includes a network of smart sensors that continuously monitor various water quality parameters, such as the presence of contaminants, pH, temperature, and turbidity. The collected data is transmitted in real time to a centralized platform, where it is analyzed and automatic alerts are generated if anomalies are detected.
