Since October 2003, Lithuania has been immersed in an unprecedented scandal, at the epicenter of which is the figure of the President of the Republic, Rolandas Paksas.
A special parliamentary committee has published a report accusing several people in the president's inner circle of being linked to international criminal organizations that traffic weapons to countries known as state sponsors of terrorism. Following this report, 86 members of parliament, enough to remove the president from power (the minimum required is 36), initiated impeachment proceedings. The outcome of this situation will likely be finalized in February, when another special parliamentary committee publishes its findings.
Experts believe Paksas's problem is that he failed to keep some of the promises he made to his campaign backers, some of whom are of dubious reputation. Furthermore, the question remains of who could replace him if he is removed from office. The former president and his opponent in the last presidential election is ruled out due to his age. The current prime minister may not be interested, as the power of the position is broader than that of the president. Paksas himself has made it clear, repeatedly, that he has no intention of resigning. Bad news for Lithuania.
