Madrid 2025: Global challenges and local opportunities for Madrid companies

For this reason, I believe it is important to reflect on the prospects and challenges that Madrid companies will face this year, in a context marked by promising opportunities and challenges that require prudence and determination.

As president of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, I face the beginning of 2025 with optimism and, at the same time, with caution. The Community of Madrid continues to consolidate itself as the economic engine of Spain and our country has one of the most dynamic economies in Europe, but we must face structural challenges of great importance such as the loss of competitiveness and the low employment rate. In addition, the international context and the global challenges They force our companies to be prepared for an environment of greater competition and complexity.

Madrid, economic leader

Macroeconomic data for 2024 indicate that the Community of Madrid continues to reaffirm its role as the driving force of the Spanish economy, which in turn is at the forefront of growth in Europe. In this framework, Madrid has consolidated its leadership as the epicentre of job creation and the reduction of unemployment, an achievement that reflects the strength of its business fabric and its ability to adapt in complex times.

Domestic consumption and exports have once again become essential pillars of our economic activity. The recovery of international markets and the renewed drive in foreign trade have demonstrated the competitiveness of our companies, which have been able to take advantage of this situation by reinventing themselves, innovating and diversifying to take advantage of new opportunities.
However, this favourable context should not make us lower our guard. Factors such as geopolitical tensions, energy prices and inflation following the elimination of anti-fiscal crisis measures can become obstacles if we do not manage them with vision and planning.

Inflation and energy challenges

While inflation seems to be under control for now, we cannot ignore the uncertainties that could arise. Geopolitical tensions, the evolution of oil prices and changes in energy and food prices – especially following the normalisation of VAT – are factors that require our attention.

In addition, the recent announcement of Ukraine on the closure of the gas pipeline that transports Russian gas to Europe This poses a potential challenge. Although Europe has managed to secure 95% of its gas reserves, guaranteeing supply for this winter, any increase in gas prices could put pressure on inflation, affecting private consumption and, therefore, job creation.

From the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, we will continue to closely monitor these circumstances to offer Madrid companies the necessary tools to adapt to this changing environment.

Global challenges: Europe in a changing world

2025 is not just any other year for the European Union. The return of Donald Trump to Casa Blanca, the closure of the Russian gas pipeline by Ukraine and economic tensions with China and Russia draw an international panorama full of challenges.

Ukraine's decision to close the Russian gas pipeline could put pressure on gas prices in Europe, which could impact inflation and, consequently, private consumption and job creation. However, the European Union has demonstrated greater resilience, with energy reserves at 95% that should prevent a crisis like the one in 2022.

On the other hand, the EU faces increasing industrial competition from the United States and China. Draghi report warns of the need for massive investment to close this gap and ensure the competitiveness of European companies. This scenario, although challenging, also offers opportunities if Madrid and Spain manage to attract more investment and position themselves as centres of innovation and development in key sectors.

Madrid as a beacon of stability and growth

In this uncertain global context, Madrid can and should act as a beacon of economic stability and business growth. At the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, we are committed to being a strategic ally for companies, offering them support, especially in areas such as:

    1. Internationalization: We will continue to support our companies to diversify their markets and take advantage of the opportunities arising from globalization, especially in sectors where Spain has a competitive advantage. Madrid is a benchmark for exports, and the Chamber will continue to help companies explore new markets and consolidate their global presence.

    2. Innovation and digitalization: We will continue to encourage and assist the adoption of new technologies so that companies are more productive and resilient in a changing global environment. We will continue to offer training, advice and resources so that SMEs and self-employed workers can integrate digital technologies that increase their competitiveness.

    3. Sustainability: We will redouble our efforts to support initiatives that promote energy transition and resource efficiency, key factors in reducing dependence on external sources. We will help our business community to adopt sustainable practices and optimize its energy consumption.

    4. Training and employment: We will focus on training programs geared toward the demands of the labor market and the needs of companies, promoting talent and facilitating the incorporation of workers into strategic sectors. We will prioritize the training of local talent and, at the same time, the attraction of talent to meet the demands of strategic sectors, thus reducing labor gaps and promoting employability.

Caution and confidence

2025 is presented as a year of great possibilities for Madrid companies. With a solid economy, a dynamic business environment and the support of Madrid's public administrations, such as the Government of the Community of Madrid or the City Council of the capital, and institutions such as the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, we are prepared to overcome the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that arise.

2025 will be a year to demonstrate that Madrid is ready to face global challenges and turn them into local opportunities. As president of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, I want to convey a message of confidence and commitment: Madrid companies will not be alone on this path.

Our message to businesses is clear: they will not be alone. We will continue to work side by side with them, defending their interests and providing them with the necessary support so that Madrid continues to lead the recovery and economic growth of Spain and Europe.

Together, we will face 2025 with the confidence that Madrid will continue to set the course towards a prosperous future.

Angel Asensio,

President of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce
