The meeting highlighted the fundamental role of data centers in the advancement of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and the 5GThis agreement is in line with the ambitious plan of the European Commission to triple the capacity of the Data Processing Centers (DPCs) in the European Union over the next five to seven years, positioning Madrid in an optimal position to lead this growth.
The Community of Madrid has established itself as one of the most technologically advanced administrations in Spain. Pioneering projects such as the Digital Shield, which protects municipalities from cyberattacks, the implementation of Artificial Intelligence in all areas of government, and the digitalization of its public services are proof of this. Currently, the region has 46 CPDs, surpassing Catalonia by 36% and Aragon by 40%. In terms of capacity, Madrid accounts for more than 50% of the installed capacity of data centers in Spain, well above the 30% of Aragon and the 12% of Catalonia.
Madrid also leads foreign investment in the high-tech sector at the national level, attracting 85.3 % of foreign capital destined for this area in Spain during 2024. Last year, the region attracted more than 8,300 millones de euros in key technological areas, representing 33.6% of the total foreign capital received.
