Maersk launches AI solution to tackle global "tariff chaos"

 

The platform seeks to return control to cargo owners in a commercial environment that Lars KarlssonMaersk's Global Director of Trade and Customs Consulting describes it as "tariff chaos."

 

In a landscape where tariffs fluctuate unpredictably and regulatory scrutiny increases, the new tool of Maersk offers centralized approach to customs and tariff management“For decades, global trade benefited from lower tariffs and barriers. But for now, this has been postponed. The current environment is characterized by unpredictability,” Karlsson noted. “Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio is our answer to this challenge: it brings clarity, regulatory compliance, agility, and cost optimization to global supply chains.”

 

The solution, which has undergone extensive pilot testing with large-scale customers, will be available for US imports starting June 28, with a full global rollout planned for August.

 

 

While ideal for customers already using Maersk's integrated logistics services, the platform can also be implemented as a standalone solution.

 

Many global companies still operate with multiple local customs brokers, resulting in fragmented data, limited visibility, and often unnecessary tariff payments. Data from Maersk reveals that, on average, 5% to 6% of tariffs are overpaid due to a lack of centralized data. Furthermore, 20% of shipment delays are attributed to poor customs preparation, and only 50% to 55% of trade eligible for customs clearance is affected. Free Trade Agreements (FTA) existing ones actually take advantage of them, losing significant savings.

It also offers early-stage compliance risk analysis to avoid delays and penalties, and provides real-time updates on tariff and regulatory changes, integrating Maersk's vast network of 2700 customs experts. The platform allows for the integration of trusted local agents, maintaining a global view.

 

In addition to tariff management, the solution will help companies comply with a growing number of complex regulations, from product safety to environmental mandates such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). “Customs declarations are one of the most complex areas of global logistics. With Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio, we not only simplify that complexity, but we also turn it into a competitive advantage for our customers,” Karlsson concluded.

 

With the increase in customs controls, especially in the U.S., Maersk is strengthening its role as a consultant and logistics partner, offering customers tools and expertise to optimize their customs strategies, reduce costs, and ensure uninterrupted trade flows.
