They intend to invest $900 million in the mine
The San Cristóbal mine, Bolivia's largest silver deposit, jointly owned by the US company Apex Silver and the Japanese company Sumitomo, began exporting silver and other minerals to its first markets in Asia.
The company, which operates in the Andean department of Potosí, reported today in a statement that last Thursday some 9.100 metric tons of silver, zinc and lead departed overseas from the Chilean port of Mejillones.
These are minerals produced in the first phase of operation of that plant, which finally began operating last July after several years of project preparation.
According to the statement, another 3.500 metric tons of the aforementioned minerals were exported from the same port of Mejillones in September.
The company expects to produce at full capacity during the last quarter of the year.
San Cristóbal operates the largest open-pit silver deposit in Bolivia, located near the border with Chile, and where it intends to invest a total of 900 million dollars.
