To address the new funding of universities
The Minister of Education and Science, Mercedes Cabrera, has announced the upcoming opening of a round of consultations with various stakeholders to address university funding. According to Cabrera, "the new model of a more open and flexible university implies a new funding model on which society as a whole should have a say." Cabrera made this announcement after holding her first meeting with the recently elected president of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), Ángel Gabilondo.
The Minister of Education and Science conveyed to Gabilondo the need to "take the debate about universities beyond the university walls," something that is also happening in the rest of Europe. The aim of this round of talks is to broaden the analysis of the new system entailed by the implementation of the European Higher Education Area and, consequently, the funding of the university of the future, to the entire Spanish society. The President of the Rectors considered this opening of dialogue "very appropriate and socially valuable."
Furthermore, Mercedes Cabrera discussed with the president of the CRUE (Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities) the Royal Decree establishing the framework for official university studies. Following approval by the Council of State, this Royal Decree will soon be ratified by the Council of Ministers. In this regard, the Minister stated that this measure establishes "the regulatory framework for universities to leverage their autonomy and clearly position themselves at the heart of society."
The minister conveyed to Ángel Gabilondo her gratitude for the "very direct communication" that the Ministry has maintained with representatives of Spanish university rectors in drafting the new regulations, thus finalizing the reform that allows the integration of Spanish universities into the European Higher Education Area. Cabrera therefore expressed her desire to "continue counting on the critical input of the rectors" in the future.
