WTO appoints Ali Sarfraz Hussain to lead key agricultural negotiations leading up to WTO 14

 

On April 1, members of the WTO They made official the appointment of the Ambassador Ali Sarfraz Hussain, marking a step forward in efforts to revitalize the agricultural talks. This appointment follows a rapid consultation process, during which members expressed their unanimous willingness to cooperate with the new chair.

 

Ambassador Hussain assumes the position succeeding Ambassador Alparslan Alcarsoy, former Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the WTO. During the meeting of the Agriculture Committee In an extraordinary session, the hard work of his predecessor was recognized, especially for the presentation of a draft text to the ministers at CM13, held in Abu Dhabi.

 

The Director General of the WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-IwealaShe emphasized the significance of this appointment, stating, "We must keep in mind that what we are doing here transcends the boundaries of this organization. It is something that will, in fact, have an enormous impact on the outside world." She also warned about the continued fragility of global food security.

 

"This is a unique opportunity to demonstrate that we can truly make a good effort and achieve results in these agricultural negotiations," Okonjo-Iweala said, encouraging members to move beyond their traditional positions and seek innovative solutions.
  

 

In his inaugural address, Ambassador Hussain declared: «An outcome at MC14 should be a pragmatic step forward. With the limited time remaining, we must focus on what is achievable and truly meaningful. He also announced his intention to begin immediate meetings with delegations and group coordinators.

 

 

This crucial designation comes at a time when global food security faces persistent challenges, and expectations are high for achieving significant outcomes at the Fourteenth WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), scheduled to be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 26 to 29 March 2026.

 

 

The new president has outlined an immediate action plan, including bilateral and group meetings, followed by an informal meeting to address critical issues such as public food stockpiling and the special safeguard mechanism. These initial meetings are expected to lay the groundwork for constructive and focused negotiations leading up to MC14.

 

In addition to leading the Committee on Agriculture, Ambassador Hussain will also assume the chairmanship of the CoASS Subcommittee on Cotton, adding another critical dimension to his role at the WTO.

 

This appointment comes at a critical time, where international cooperation is essential to address the challenges of food security and agricultural trade. Ambassador Hussain's ability to foster consensus and lead effective negotiations will be crucial to the success of the CM14.
