The closure affects the 32 Movistar corporate branches in Venezuela
Venezuelan tax authority SENIAT today closed Movistar, a subsidiary of Telefónica de España in Venezuela, for 48 hours and imposed a fine of $437,5 after detecting "irregularities" in its accounting books.
Prosecutors "detected irregularities in the Value Added Tax (VAT) purchase ledger during the period between March and August of this year," a statement from the tax agency said.
The National Integrated Service of Tax and Customs Administration (SENIAT) applied "a 48-hour closure measure and a monetary penalty of 25 tax units, equivalent to 940.800 bolivars (437,5 dollars) to the company," the official statement added.
The closure measure will affect "all 32 corporate branches" of the cell phone company Movistar in the country and "the headquarters in Caracas, which will not be able to carry out commercial transactions," the tax authority stated.
The official information added that "authorized agents or points of sale" and "users" will not be affected by the "administrative" sanctions against the cell phone and internet service company.
The SENIAT reported that this is the "second time" it has sanctioned Movistar, since "irregularities were also found in VAT matters in 2005."
