Port of Algeciras consolidates its position as a global energy benchmark at International Energy Week in London

The participation of Port of Algeciras in the IEWeek, which takes place from 25 to 27 February, underlines its position as a leader in the supply of fuel to ships in the Spanish port system. At this event, organised by the International Bunkering Industry Association (IBIA)The Algeciras delegation seeks to reinforce its image as a key enclave in the energy transition of maritime transport.

The main focus of IEWeek 2025 is on promoting cleaner fuels and adopting innovative technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector. In this context, the Port of Algeciras stands out for its ability to optimize and improve the efficiency of supply operations in its anchorages, thanks to the implementation of cutting-edge technological solutions.

“We are here to show the world that the Port of Algeciras is a strategic partner in the search for sustainable energy solutions for maritime transport,” declared a representative of the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (APBA). “Our infrastructure and experience allow us to offer high-quality bunkering services, while also promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels.”

The objective has been to promote the strategic and operational advantages of the Bay of Algeciras in the international maritime energy sector.

The Algeciras delegation, in addition to the Port Authority, is made up of important companies such as A. Pérez and Co., Bacomar Logistic, EVOS, MH Bland, Moeve and Peninsula, has the support of Víctor Jiménez, President of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This joint presence reflects the commitment of the port community of Algeciras to sustainability and excellence in service.

The Port of Algeciras closed the year 2024 with a significant milestone, exceeding 3,2 million tons of fuel supplied to ships, consolidating its leadership in the national port system. This achievement not only highlights its operational capacity, but also its contribution to the local economy, generating more than 1.200 jobs in the ship services sector, according to a study by the University of Cadiz (UCA).

During the IEWeek, critical issues are addressed such as the decarbonization of the sector, the geopolitical situation in the Red Sea, the production and demand prospects for new fuels, and the business models and technologies to achieve zero emissions in maritime transport. The participation of the Port of Algeciras in these debates underlines its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
