Spanish innovation has captured the world's attention. The bioengineering company Rayo-seco Systems® has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in the Innovation Fair de SICOT 2025, the world's leading congress on orthopedic surgery and traumatology. The award was given to a project that promises to transform surgery with custom implants in a record time of three days.
The award was given to the biomedical engineer Celia del Peso LeyDel Peso Ley, who has led the development of an innovative mold system, explains that unlike traditional implant production, which takes up to six weeks, this new technology reduces the time to just three days, at a significantly lower cost. "This system allows us to create customized 3D implants directly in the operating room," explains del Peso Ley, "which reduces the cost to around €2.000, 85-95% less than the usual range of €15.000 to €30.000."
With this award, Rayo-seco Systems reaffirms its mission to transform medical practice by integrating biotechnology, artificial intelligence, extended reality (XR), 3D modeling and additive printing.
This breakthrough is particularly crucial in the field of oncology, where time is a determining factor. The speed of the process could mean the difference between preserving a limb or amputation. The project is the result of a collaboration between Rayo-seco Systems®, Hospital Universitario La Paz from Madrid and the company ISP-XRThe award winner recognized the invaluable contribution of the medical team at La Paz Hospital, led by Dr. Eduardo Ortiz Cruz, and the work of the 3D Management Lab.
