Meeting of the Industrial Observatory of Capital Goods Manufacturers

The sector is committed to R&D&I

The members of the Industrial Observatory for the Capital Goods Manufacturing Sector, at a meeting held today at the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, presented the work carried out in 2006 to assess its second year of operation. In terms of revenue, the Capital Goods sector in the Spanish economy exceeded €42.000 billion in 2006. In terms of employment, it provides 400.000 jobs directly and indirectly. Furthermore, the sector represents approximately 1,7% of Spain's Gross Domestic Product and 10% of its Gross Industrial Value Added. The Observatory's main conclusions and recommendations focus on the following areas of action:

The capital goods sector must continue to be promoted and modernized, given its recognized importance to societal development due to its high level of technology and its capacity to generate added value. This sector thus becomes a key element for achieving balanced economic growth and gaining competitiveness in international markets.

The capital goods industry is in a very favorable situation, supported by strong domestic demand and, to a lesser extent, by a certain recovery in exports.

Training in the sector requires greater coordination among training initiatives, both at the company and sector levels. The Observatory recommends the exchange of best practices on training among stakeholders, seeking commonalities in their individual experiences.

The analysis of the indicators on the situation of the IR&D in the sector show a more favorable trend towards carrying out innovative activities in companies, with total spending by companies with innovative activities increasing by 26% during 2006, with a more significant participation of SMEs in said spending.

There are multiple initiatives aimed at promoting and planning for the I+D&I for the sector, providing information on technological innovations or calls for proposals to support innovation, which is of particular interest to SMEs. The Observatory proposes focusing initiatives to promote the I+D+i towards the specific needs of companies, as well as the centralization of information on this subject, so that it is offered in a classified and useful way to companies.

For the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the contributions of the Observatory constitute a tool to better define its industrial policy for the sector in the future.

Subsequent work by the Observatory will delve deeper into each of the aspects mentioned, while continuing to diagnose the needs of the sector.

The Observatory is a permanent meeting forum and a fundamental tool for the analysis of the sector, capable of systematizing the collection and processing of information on its needs and demands, its results and perspectives, the implementation of new elements of innovation and strategic systems that improve the competitiveness of companies and thereby ensure the future of the sector.

The following have participated Association National of Manufacturers of Capital Goods (SERCOBE), the Federation Miner Metalworking of Workers' Commissions (FM – CCOO), Metal, Construction and Related Industries the General Union of Workers (MCA – UGT), the Federation Spanish from Innovation and Technology Entities (FEDIT) and from the Public Administrations, the Ministry of Labor and AsunSocial Services and the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, which coordinates the operation of the Observatory.
