U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met today with Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, to whom she emphasized the commitment of her country's Congress to move forward with the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Andean nation.
The meeting took place in New York, where leaders from around the world have traveled to participate in the annual debate of the UN General Assembly.
According to Gonzalo Gallegos, a State Department official, President Uribe used the meeting to discuss the progress made in Colombia regarding human rights and reducing violence against union members.
According to the same sources, Condoleezza Rice "urged Uribe to continue these efforts and underlined Congress's commitment to satisfactorily consider all free trade agreements, including the one with Colombia."
Today, the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Media Committee, Democrat Charles Rangel, expressed serious concerns about the future of the free trade agreement with Panama and Colombia, due to the political situation in both countries.
In the case of Colombia, Rangel hinted that the FTA with that country does not yet have the necessary votes for its approval.
In that regard, Rangel indicated that, with respect to the treaties with Panama and Colombia, everything will depend on the actions taken by the Executive Branch because, now, "the ball is in their court."
