RWE awards Técnicas Reunidas and Ansaldo Energia the project for a combined cycle hydrogen plant in Germany

The German company RWE, one of the main producers of electrical energy of Europe, has awarded to a consortium formed by Técnicas Reunidas and Ansaldo Energia the construction project of a large 800 MW hydrogen combined cycle power plant on the site of Gersteinwerk, located in the region of Münster, as reported in a statement.

The installation is part of the effort that RWE is currently developing to contribute to the German Government's plan to complete the definitive closure of all coal plants in the country, initially scheduled for 2030.

 

This CCGT is of the same type and power as the one that RWE plans to develop at the Weisweiler site, in the Rhineland region, and that the German company also awarded to a consortium made up of Técnicas Reunidas and Ansaldo Energia last year.

 

According to plans recently presented by the German Government for the development of hydrogen infrastructure in the country, the Gersteinwerk It will be located near the future supply network for this new fuel.

 

The German Government has announced that its new power plant strategy will soon include a regulatory framework for the tendering of natural gas plants prepared to use hydrogen.

 

The activities to obtain permits for the Gersteinwerk plant have already been initiated by the consortium formed by Técnicas Reunidas and Ansaldo Energia.

 

The scope of work for Técnicas Reunidas will include the project design engineering, the supply of equipment, and the construction and commissioning of the plant.

 

 

In turn, Ansaldo Energia will supply the gas turbine and the steam turbine, their corresponding generators, the heat recovery boiler and other equipment.

 

Gonzalo Pardo, Director of Energy Transition Business Development at Técnicas Reunidas, highlighted that this project “is part of the long experience accumulated by our company in the development of facilities that use new fuels, such as hydrogen, which are essential for the energy transition. , and in the strong push we currently give to our decarbonization activities.
