The 5th International Logistics Exhibition SIL 2003 was held from June 17 to 20, 2003 at the Montjuïc-1 fairgrounds of Fira de Barcelona.
This event transformed Barcelona into the international capital of logistics for four days, becoming the largest platform and showcase for the sector, where the most prominent logistics professionals from around the world gathered.
His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias inaugurated the SIL (International Logistics Exhibition) and visited the exhibition accompanied by Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona, and Enrique Lacalle, President of the SIL. Lacalle emphasized that the International Logistics Exhibition "has exceeded all expectations and has been visited by 33.597 professionals from the sector," confirming once again the importance of this event within the international logistics industry. According to the President of the SIL, this exhibition has become "the essential event for the logistics sector, its meeting point and an indispensable benchmark for the Mediterranean region and for business relations between Europe, Latin America, and North Africa."
The number of exhibiting firms exceeded 500 and 800 were the total number of participating companies, of which 40% were international.
As for professional visitors, all records from previous editions were broken, reaching a total of 33.597 from all over the world.
International participation was well represented in the pavilions of Italy, Algeria, France, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, and Florida, among others. In addition to these pavilions, 66 countries participated through exhibiting companies and professional visitors.
These figures position the International Logistics Exhibition as the first at the national level and the second at the European level due to its characteristics.
During the last few editions, the Show has grown considerably, not only in exhibiting firms and visitors, but also in surface area, going from 10.000 m2 in 1999 to 60.000 m2 in the current edition.
The three main exhibition sectors were: Equipment, Handling and Logistics; Distribution and Transport; and Services and Technologies (e-logistics).
In this edition, the e-logistics area brought together 21 companies dedicated to providing services to the logistics sector. These included consulting firms, hardware and software providers, telecommunications operators, and outsourcing companies.
Another highly prestigious event is Logistics Night, which recognizes contributions to the logistics sector. The awards ceremony took place at the Palau de Pedralbes, where more than 1.600 guests gathered. It was presided over by Felip Puig, Minister of Public Works and Territorial Policy of the Generalitat (Valencian Government).
Next year, the International Logistics Exhibition and the Portal Point International Internet and New Technologies Exhibition, both promoted by the Barcelona Free Zone Consortium, will be held jointly from June 15 to 18 at Fira de Barcelona.
Likewise, an agreement was signed between the Free Trade Zone Consortium and the Spanish Material Handling Association (AEM) so that, starting in 2004, SIL would also include MANUTEC, the Material Handling and Storage Exhibition, which until now had been held at the Madrid Trade Fair. This agreement was signed for a period of two years, during which this subsector will have a specific thematic area at SIL for warehousing and material handling companies to showcase their products.
