The prime ministers of China and Japan traveled to Seoul this Monday, May 27, for a summit that had not been held since 2019.

The meeting took place amidst the concern of Pekin for the participation of Seoul and Tokyo in export controls designed to restrict China's access to next-generation chip technologies, as well as its growing military cooperation with U.S.
However, Chinese Premier Li Qiang declared the summit the "new beginning" of its relations with South Korea and Japan and the three countries pledged to resume talks on a Free trade agreement. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the supply chain and communicate more closely on control measures for exports.
Li took advantage of the occasion to show his opposition to protectionism after the new tariffs approved by the US against China last week. He also urged Seoul and Tokyo to "care for each other's core interests" in a warning against adhering to Washington's containment policies on China. Finally, the three leaders agreed to meet once a year.
