Catalan producers have protested vehemently against the campaign to drastically reduce prices for Rioja wines, one of only two Qualified Designations of Origin in Spain, along with Priorat. The situation stems from the market share Rioja has lost following widespread price increases in recent years and the resulting consumer backlash, with consumers opting for alternative products, including Catalan wines. These price increases were caused by higher grape prices due to poor harvests. Sources at the Rioja Regulatory Board describe the market losses suffered in 2000 as "catastrophic." Exports in 2000 fell by 30%, reaching 39,7 million liters.
