Telefónica integrates six innovation centers into NATO's DIANA accelerator to lead in dual-use technologies

Telefónica and OTAN They have formalized an agreement to integrate six Spanish innovation centers into the program DIANA, in order to accelerate dual-use (civilian and military) technologies in critical areas such as quantum physics and cybersecurity.

Boosting technological sovereignty and transatlantic defense

Collaboration between Telefónica and OTAN This represents a milestone in the internationalization of Spanish innovation. Through this framework agreement, six of the operator's development centers join the Acelerador de Innovación en Defensa para el Atlántico Norte (DIANAThese spaces are in addition to Campus El Pardo of the INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Aeroespacial), consolidating the company as the main Spanish private benchmark in this global security network.

The fundamental objective of this alliance is twofold. In the short term, DIANA will access the facilities of Telefónica to develop solutions in next-generation networks and Internet of Things (IoTIn the long term, the aim is to exchange knowledge with the 150 companies participating in the accelerator to validate technologies in the field of global defense.

Key infrastructures integrated into the project

The centers selected for their high technical specialization and testing capacity are the following:

  • TEFQCI (Madrid): Experimental quantum communications network for security QKD and post-quantum algorithms.
  • The ThinX (Madrid): Advanced Laboratory of IoT, Big Data y Cloud for simulation in real-world environments.
  • Centro de Innovación y Laboratorio (Malaga): Specialized in IA and cross-cutting cybersecurity.
  • Centro de Tecnología e Innovación (Alcobendas): 3.000 m2 space with autonomous miniaturization of fixed and mobile networks.
  • C4IN (León): Industrial cybersecurity center specializing in Industry 4.0.

Of particular importance is the center TEFQCIwhich acts as a basis for the future quantum internet. In this space, Telefónica It leads tests to protect critical infrastructure, data centers, and home devices such as smart meters against future quantum computing attacks.

Center / Active Location Main Specialization
TEFQCI District Telefónica (Madrid) Quantum Communications (QKD / PQC)

The DIANA ecosystem: Dual-use innovation

The program DIANALaunched in 2023, it has built a transatlantic ecosystem connecting testing centers and accelerators across all Alliance countries. Under the direction of civilian and military experts since Londres, Tallin y HalifaxThe organization currently collaborates with more than 200 testing centers to solve global security challenges using commercially available technologies.

Key points and frequently asked questions about the Telefónica-NATO alliance

What is a dual-use technology?
It refers to technological innovations, such as quantum computing or 5G, which have applications in both the commercial civilian market and the defense and national security sector.

What role does the TEFQCI center play in Madrid?
It is the main asset for the development of the quantum internet, using solutions Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to ensure that communications cannot be deciphered by future quantum attacks.

How many companies participate in the DIANA ecosystem?
Currently, the program has the participation of 150 companies that validate technological concepts and use cases, supported by a network of more than 20 affiliated accelerator organizations.
