Its well-known "skyline", characterized by buildings taller than any other German city, owes much to the numerous German and international banks that have formed – together with the Stock Exchange, the headquarters of the Bundesbank, the German Central Bank and the European Central Bank – Frankfurt, making it the number one financial center in Germany.
But in the development and promotion of tourism in the German city, there is another factor we must consider: Messe Frankfurt. Its exhibition center, a distinctive symbol of the city and an example of functionality and aesthetics, hosts 16 leading events in the consumer goods, automotive and technology, textiles, communications, and leisure sectors.
All of these attractions draw thousands of visitors each year, who become potential tourists, generating a significant influx of indirect revenue for the city. It is, after all, the largest trade fair company in Germany. The exhibition center already boasts ten halls (321,000 square meters of floor space), open spaces available for events (89,000 square meters), a congress center, and the new Forum. The Messe Frankfurt facilities as a whole cover an area of over 470.000 square meters and feature an advanced and constantly updated communications infrastructure.
Messe Frankfurt's trade fairs offer a unique platform for 51,000 companies from around the world to present their latest products and services to the approximately 2,3 million visitors who attend these events each year. A significant indicator of the international nature of Messe Frankfurt's trade fairs is that over 60% of the exhibiting companies participating in the 46 events held in Germany come from abroad.
Due to its favorable location for trade, Frankfurt is among the oldest European trading centers north of the Alps and boasts the third largest trade fair grounds in the world. Records show that the first trade fairs were held in Frankfurt as early as the 11th century.
