Italy has proposed two projects to Turkey to remove toxic waste stored in the Black Sea cities of Samsun and Sinop. These projects were announced following a meeting held on January 22 and 23 in Rome between the Joint Commission for Environmental Cooperation between Turkey and Italy.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the main topics of the meeting were waste management in both countries and the removal of Italy's garbage currently stored in Samsun and Sinop.
The Turkish delegation presented their Italian counterparts with a document detailing the containers in Samsun and Sinop, the most important complaints of the region's residents, and a document containing 35.000 signatures.
Led by Aydin Yildirim, the Turkish delegation demanded the removal of waste from the country and expressed the need for the area's rehabilitation. The Italian delegation, for its part, presented papers entitled "The Integrated Administration Project in Turkey" and "Project to Establish a Local Center for the Basel Agreement." Discussions will continue at a future meeting to be held in Ankara.
