The World Tourism Organization encourages Ukraine to develop its tourism sector, particularly rural tourism. The government will assist Ukrainian travel agencies in presenting their services to the international market.
Last year, Ukraine was visited by more than 6 million foreigners. This is a 9% increase compared to 2002. However, according to experts, the pace of development in the tourist region is still too slow to generate significant revenue for the state budget, and one of the main reasons for this is a lack of information.
The situation could be improved by the participation of specialists and agency representatives in well-known world tourism exhibitions.
Until 2010, Ukraine will implement a tourism promotion program that aims to increase tourism's contribution to GDP by up to 14 percentage points and involve an investment of over 11 billion hryvnias. The state will retain only 40 million hryvnias, with the remaining funds distributed among private companies. The program focuses on expanding and improving the quality of Ukraine's tourism infrastructure, simplifying border crossing procedures, and reducing taxes for tourism companies. It is expected that these measures will result in an annual increase of half a million tourists visiting Ukraine.
