The ambitious project of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina has officially entered its execution phase, a milestone that marks the launch of a global engineering icon. With the approval of the final design by the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS), the construction of the suspension bridge with the longest suspended span in the world is confirmed.
The clear span of the bridge's main span, at 3,300 meters, will far exceed the bridge's current record of 2,023 meters. Complementary works include more than 40 kilometers of roads and railway lines in Sicily and Calabria, with the construction of new train stations in Messina and a multipurpose center in Calabria. These improvements will transform regional mobility and boost economic development, employment, and tourism in southern Italy.
The bridge, whose contract is estimated to cost €10.600 billion, will be an emblem of top-level engineering and Italian industry, a symbol of the ability to build and execute major infrastructure projects on a global scale.
A consortium of experts at the forefront of engineering
The project is led by the consortium Eurolinks, headed by the Italian company Webuild and with the outstanding participation of the Spanish Sacyr (with 22.4%). Renowned companies such as the Japanese company also participate in the consortium IHI and the Italians Condotte and ItineraThe bridge's technical design was the responsibility of an international team of specialists, including the Danish suspension bridge expert COWI.
The bridge's technical characteristics are extraordinary. With a deck measuring 3.666 meters long and 60 meters wide, the structure will have three vehicle lanes in each direction, two rail tracks, and two service lanes. Its design is designed to support up to 200 trains and 6.000 vehicles per hour, ensuring a fluid and efficient connection between the peninsula and Sicily's five million inhabitants.
Design and safety: resistance to earthquakes and winds
The bridge's steel piers will reach 399 meters in height, and the suspension system will consist of cables measuring 1.26 meters in diameter and 5.320 meters in length. The bridge's advanced design is designed to withstand the region's seismic activity and extreme winds. Additionally, an intelligent monitoring system will oversee the structure to ensure safety and predictive maintenance.
The project is part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), an initiative that seeks to strengthen the strategic role of southern Italy in European logistics and the economy. With the entry into force of the contract, following its official publication, the project is poised to become a reality that will change the future of transport and development in the Mediterranean.
