Valencia, epicenter of global port optimization with the PCO Network meeting

The Port of Valencia becomes the heart of global maritime innovation this week by hosting the second annual plenary meeting of the 'Port Call Optimization Network' (PCO Network). The event, of international significance, has been organized by the Valenciaport Foundation in close collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam and is supported by the program's projects Horizon Europe, MISSION and DYNAPORT.

More than 90 representatives of world-class ports, such as Singapore, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Bremen/Bremerhaven, Algeciras and Tangier, together with important international organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), and BIMCO, among others, have gathered in the capital of the Turia River. The main objective of the meeting is to bring together the most influential players in the maritime-port sector to share the latest advances and coordinate efforts to improve the efficiency of port calls on a global scale.

La PCO Network It is defined as an independent and neutral coalition that seeks to accelerate the adoption of common standards for the exchange of crucial data (nautical, operational, and administrative) during all phases of a vessel's call: from approach and entry, through berthing and port operations, to unberthing and departure. This standardization seeks to optimize processes, minimize downtime for both vessels and berths, and make more efficient use of depths and drafts.

A central element of their work is the development of the document “Port Call Optimization Guide”. This guide will compile recommendations for shipping lines, nautical service providers, terminal operators and port authorities, in order to optimize port-to-port and berth-to-berth operations for vessels operating under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

The expected benefits of this initiative are significant. A substantial improvement in the coordination and optimization of port calls is projected, resulting in an estimated 15% reduction in polluting emissions, primarily due to reduced vessel waiting times. Furthermore, greater visibility and transparency throughout the port call process for all involved parties is anticipated, translating into improvements in operational efficiency, safety, service levels, and cost reduction for both ports and shipping lines.

The meeting also featured active participation from providers of maritime digital solutions, nautical and maritime service companies, and initiatives focused on optimizing port calls, both in terms of the vessel's voyage and its stay at port facilities.
