Wal-Mart de México reports 19% higher net profit in the third quarter

Even though sales were affected by the economic slowdown

Wal-Mart Mexico's net profit amounted to 214.2 million euros (about 305 million dollars) in the third quarter of 2007, a figure 19% higher than the same period last year.
The Mexican subsidiary of the US chain Wal-Mart indicated in a statement sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange that between July and September it registered total sales of 3.352 billion euros (4.771 billion dollars), 8% higher in real terms than the same months of 2006.
Operating cash flow (EBITDA) in this period amounted to 331.6 million euros (472 million dollars), which represented an increase of 16% compared to the same quarter of 2006.
"Third-quarter sales were affected by the economic slowdown in Mexico and the US, which in our case was reflected in a lower average purchase," said Eduardo Solórzano, president of Wal-Mart de México.
In the first nine months of this year, the retail chain recorded accumulated net profits of 598.2 million euros (about 851 million dollars), a figure 14% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2006.
Wal-Mart de México has been listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange since 1977 and has 966 retail stores and restaurants in the country, and is the leading retail chain in the country with more than 141.000 employees and a presence in 160 Mexican cities.
