FITUR 2002 expands by 70.192 square meters, representing an increase of 13 percent compared to FITUR 2001. This growth has been made possible thanks to the addition of the two new pavilions, 9 and 10, recently put into operation.
Part of the show's offering, and given the growing specialization of the sector, is showcased through the monographic sections that the event has been developing in recent years.
Thus, the Tourism Knowledge Fair, FITUR KNOW HOW, reflects the innovative efforts of an increasingly competitive industry.
The offering in this area is structured in the sections of Technology, Training, Consulting, Quality, Hotel Management, Infrastructure Development and Environmental Management.
This effort is reflected in the publication of the Guide to Spanish Tourism Technology, co-published by the State Secretariat for Trade and Tourism.
For the first time, this Guide will also be available on CD, with a multi-criteria search system that allows precise access to the required information.
This Guide, which has the collaboration of the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), offers a comprehensive list of products related to Quality, Training, Management of Tourism Companies, Infrastructure and facilities, Socioeconomic research, Marketing, Environment, Strategic planning, Technologies of tourist equipment and information, and e-tourism.
Within the FITUR KNOW-HOW framework, there is another initiative that has been running for several editions: the Spanish Tourism Technology Room, organized by the State Secretariat for Trade and Tourism.
For its part, FITUR ACTIVO has long been showcasing the growing range of active tourism offerings in the institutional pavilions that house the autonomous communities, differentiated into the categories of Nature, Adventure, and Culture. A multitude of options that contribute to reducing the seasonality of tourism are comprehensively detailed in the seventh Active Tourism Guide, published in conjunction with the State Secretariat for Trade and Tourism. For the first time, this guide is being published in English for international distribution.
Special mention must be made of FITUR CONGRESOS, the Meetings and Incentive Travel Show, which celebrates its third anniversary amidst a thriving meetings market that, thanks to Spain's infrastructure and excellent landscapes and historical sites, faces a promising future. This edition will be held on January 28 and 29. For the first time, FITUR CONGRESOS will take place at the Juan Carlos I Trade Fair Park (Hall 2).
Technical Conference
Equally intense is the program of Technical Sessions at FITUR 2002. FITUR will host important events such as the 5th Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Businesspeople of Tourism, CIMET; the 3rd Euro-Mediterranean Forum; and the meeting of the Tourism Roundtable on strikes and the tourism sector.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is once again taking center stage with its conferences on "Risk Management. Tourism and Freedom"; "Education and Training in Tourism: New Content and Methods"; "E-business in Tourism: Practical Guidelines for Destinations and Companies"; and "Ecotourism," as well as the celebration of the UNWTO Education Council.
FITUR will also serve for the presentation of interesting documents, such as a study on Residential Tourism and the book "Spanish tourist activity in 2000" by the Spanish Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism, AECIT.
During the weekend of February 2nd and 3rd, the traditional Folk Festival of the Peoples of the World will be celebrated, marking its twenty-second edition.
Also, at FITUR 2002, its awards will be decided, intended to distinguish the work of the exhibitors in their different fields: VII Competition for the Best Active Tourism Product (FITUR ACTIVO); XXII Competition for the Best Stand, and the III FITUR/Jorge Vila Fradera Tribune, to reward tourism research.
FITURONLINE.COM, an essential tool
