Jiaxing: logistics, manufacturing, innovation and silk
Jiaxing is a city located in the province of Zhejiang, in the central coastal area of China, 100 km from Shanghai, which has 1.5 million inhabitants, and about 5.5 million if its entire metropolitan area is included.
Its location is strategic, between four large production centers: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Ningbo. With a humid and subtropical monsoon climate, and 40 minutes by train from Shanghai, it is an eminently industrial and manufacturing city, where rivers and lakes intersect. The province of which it is part, Zhejiang, with 57 million inhabitants, is the origin of most of the Chinese emigrants living in Aragon, Spain and Europe.
Located in the geographic center of the river delta region Yangtze, its port is one of the ten largest in China by merchandise transported. In addition to its functions as a commercial and industrial center, the city is also a center for regional land and water communications.
The city has numerous canals, lakes and green areas that give it a unique urban morphology, a 'city of canals' recognized as a sustainable city within China. The Grand Canal Beijing – Hangzhou structures its different urban areas.
Traditionally, it boasted a wool industry (which still produces textiles and knitwear today) and rice mills for polishing and oil extraction. Another long-established industry is papermaking. Today, the city produces most of China's cigarette paper. But its greatest traditional fame is as the "hometown of silk," the city's traditional production, which makes it China's leading producer of textiles and wool. It is also one of the world's largest exporters of leather goods.
By productive sectors, industry is the main economic engine of the local economy, and contributes about 46% of its GDP. It has a significant presence of mechanical, chemical and electronic factories, and is an important energy base in eastern China. In 2003, the Jiaxing Export Processing Zone was established as a state-level pioneer area. It houses companies in the ICT, mechanical and electrical, electronics and other high-tech industries.
Jiaxing has the presence of more than 200 European industries in its surroundings, among them the Aragonese Fersa Bearings, which in 2011 installed a bearing production plant there, currently with about 200 employees, complementary to its central activity in the Plaza logistics platform.
